Faux Walls
False walls are a great hidden storage option to help keep the base organized. You can either build out a wall using drywall or use faux paint to give the impression of brick, leather or other design to add variety without giving away that there is a usable space on the other side. This frees up the actual floor space for other uses without removing storage space from the home. You could just use faux walls as a simple design element.
Partitions/Cabinet
You can use curtains to separate the basement space. So you could have your tools stored on a pegboard on one wall, but a simple drape will hide that wall. This provides living and storage space without the hassle of getting permits to add walls.
If you are unable to move your laundry room from the basement, but you want to make the area into an entertainment area, all is not lost. Pipe wall shelving units are attractive and creative and can work well in a basement regardless of the use of the basement. These shelves can be used for books, toys, knickknacks and plants.
Windows
If possible, put in a window or two, but create a reading nook. Build a platform for this where the base is storage and the stop provides seating or a comfy sofa for reclining.
Under the Stairs
Close off the space under the stairs leading to the basement and use it for storage. If you are looking for a small work area, this space depending on the size of the space could work. You will need to put in good overhead and desk light. Using this area as a work office leaves the rest of the basement for other things.
